On a background of 13 years working in health care, my passion for complementary medicine (like so many others) was borne out of a search for wellness. At 18, while studying acting, most of my spare time was spent in the medical sciences library trying to understand why I felt so rotten. Multiple visits to medical practitioners provided little insight, and my medications had endowed me with 10 extra kilos and a new level of fatigue.

At the end of my tether, some wise naturopathic advice provided me with the first relief that I’d had, and inspired me to study naturopathy to pursue wellness to the end – both for myself and for those like me struggling to find some answers.

I graduated (with good health and 10kg lighter) in early 2001, and began my first clinic in a local pharmacy, who thankfully provided the opportunity to see patients full-time for almost 4 years. This is where I truly discovered the term “chronic, multi-factorial illness”. No-one was coming in for a simple cold and flu remedies, they were coming in with chronic illnesses that had been caused by multiple factors, all interacting to create a blur of overlapping symptoms.

The demand for better answers in clinic led to a Bachelor of Science, with specialty study into weight loss and hormonal health. This then led to a Postgraduate diploma in Psychology, and a passion for holistic mental health; (and a few months of Film and Television production just to quell my university addiction).

For the last 2 years I have practiced from Vive in Hawthorne, amongst Brisbane’s finest Naturopaths and many wonderful clients.

From this experience my areas of greatest passion and specialty are:
Allergies and digestive health
Thyroid health
Adrenal hypersensitivity and fatigue
Mental wellness – happiness!
Female hormones
Healthy weight management

Congratulations Mel and Aidan

Melissa Le Breton is a qualified naturopath, massage therapist and speech pathologist. She completed her degree in Melbourne as a naturopath and moved to Brisbane in 2005. Melissa has a passion for herbal medicine.

With her knowledge and experience of working in a hospital setting she understands the complexities of treating chronic illness and symptoms of vague origin that have no medical diagnosis. She has a special interest in assisting women and children to gain better health using herbal remedies, flower essences, dietary therapy, nutritional supplementation, homeopathy complexes, massage, counselling and lifestyle advice. This may range from general health problems such as recurring infections, digestive disturbances, fatigue, skin disorders, insomnia, allergies, low vitality, anxiety & depression to more specific conditions such as reproductive health problems, PMS, preconception planning, pregnancy, menopausal symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome and behavioural disorders in children.

She also uses iridology as a tool to assess the strengths and weaknesses in your body through analysis of the eye to determine inherited traits and susceptibilities you may have.

Meliss’a focus is to educate, empower and motivate you to heal yourself so you may reach your optimal level of health and well being.

Massage
Massage promotes relaxation both physically and mentally. It also improves circulation of blood and lymph, increases immune system functioning and can reduce anxiety and depression by releasing tension and stress.

Melissa’s focus is predominately Swedish massage combined with Therapeutic massage, a deeper form of massage using trigger point therapy as well as Shiatsu and Aromatherapy.

Melissa is currently on maternity leave but will be returning to VIVE in the near future.

As a plumber, bored out of my brain, I grew the desire to study and work in the fitness industry. While loving the environment of work in fitness centres, it was from working with clients that a noticeable variance in performance and or recovery from individuals occurred. It was these situations that I developed a greater interest in Nutrition and the value of herbal medicine. In 2000 I graduated in Naturopathy from Australian College of Natural medicine.

While still studying I began working and later practiced from Sunnybank Health Foods which was owned and operated by now business partner Marilyn Lemaire.

With a passion for food and more importantly food of organic growing methods, I began working towards the organic food concept. It is at this stage where the goal to own and operate an Organic health food centre, that focused on clinical practice was nurtured.

As a founder and business partner of Vive, I spent almost 2 years planning and designing the Vive concept with Marilyn. Weekend after weekend Vive was developed towards the format which it now operates. Vive opened in August 2005.

Being a male minority in the Naturopathy profession, specialising in nutritional medicine and the concerns that are specific to male health is of importance to me.

Keeping an interest in sport and exercise has also continued. Interest in fitness and exercise from a Nutritional and Herbal aspect for those wanting to gain more from their sport or exercise programs is where my true passion lies.

Special areas of interest include:
Nutritional and herbal management for long distance endurance events
Nutritional and herbal management for resistance training
Fluid and electrolyte balance in sports

Areas of personal interest include:
Endurance racing
Nutrition for exercise performance
Cricket
Motorbikes

My interest in health foods started in Calgary in 1977 when because of my business management experience I found myself co-managing a health food store. It still remains a treasured memory. When I moved to Australia in 1985 the opportunity was there for me to revisit this passion and I studied Naturopathy full time.

My study years were stimulating, exciting, inspiring and truly a discovery of where my interests lie. All areas of complementary health interest me but my greatest passion is in herbal medicine. By owning and co-owning health food stores, I am able to combine my love of herbal medicine, health foods and of business. I have been involved in the health food industry since 1994 and I love the opportunity to help all customers achieve their health goals.

Over the years I have developed an amazing respect for herbal medicine and I love the opportunity to make up formulas or prescribe teas whether it be for acute or chronic conditions. I like to make herbal formulas for many conditions but the following are the areas where I have witnessed the most amazing results:
Low immune system
Inflammation
Nervous exhaustion
Skin complaints
Digestion problems
Colds and flu
Stress
Hormonal imbalance
